Pdf Summary
The ACEC Online Series session titled "Digital Transformation: Tech 101," held on July 17, 2024, provided a comprehensive overview of the role of technology in the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) industry, focusing on the ACEC Technology Committee’s efforts to foster digital adoption. Presenters Raj Arora, PE (CEO, Jensen Hughes and ACEC Tech Committee Chair) and Claire Rutkowski, PMP (Chief Information Officer, POWER Engineers) led discussions on evaluating digital transformation journeys, change management, and leveraging resources.

The ACEC Technology Committee aims to raise awareness about technology’s business impact, ensuring no member firm is left behind by engaging members, clients, and talent through listening, education, and advocacy. The session emphasized the industry's historical lag in adopting new technologies due to risk aversion, resistance to change, fragmented standards, and complex business models.

A framework was introduced categorizing technology into three horizons: technology running the firm, delivering projects, and solving client problems, spanning domains like AI, Big Data, Digital Delivery, and Cybersecurity. Value drivers include talent attraction, new revenue, productivity, and quality.

Change management insights outlined typical organizational responses across leadership levels and individual contributors, highlighting stages of transition (denial, resistance, exploration, commitment) and the leader’s role in guiding teams.

Strategies for launching technology initiatives emphasized aligning tech strategy with business goals, conducting SWOT analyses, engaging organizational stakeholders, and choosing build, buy, or borrow approaches. Encouragement was given to leverage vendor collaborations, cross-functional teamwork, and continuous education.

The session concluded by addressing risks such as new competitors, AI safety, data security, and contract shifts, balanced by opportunities like improved productivity, shedding low-value work, attracting talent, and creating new client value. Upcoming sessions and resources, including ACEC’s AI guidelines, were promoted for continued learning.

For further engagement, attendees were directed to the ACEC technology platform at tech.acec.org.
