Pdf Summary
This presentation by Doug Miller, CEO/CTO of The Brightworks Group LLC, addresses managing IT effectively for Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC) firms. It highlights common pain points such as lack of dedicated IT staff, reliance on reactive "break-fix" services, licensing hassles, unreliable technology, cybersecurity risks, and unexpected issues that disrupt business.

AEC firms require IT solutions that function like dependable utilities—stable, cost-predictable, and serving business needs without becoming a distraction. The focus should be on human-centered IT, viewing technology as a tool to support business success rather than an end in itself.

The core strategy is implementing "Practical IT," which involves a disciplined, process-driven approach to IT management summarized in three principles: Regularize, Standardize, and Measure & Track.

1. Regularize: Emphasizes stability through regular maintenance such as patching, hardware lifecycle management, warranty tracking, backups, and disaster recovery. It also stresses controlling changes via documented processes and scheduled maintenance windows to avoid unnecessary disruptions.

2. Standardize: Establish consistent IT standards and best practices to eliminate ad hoc solutions. This includes decisions on data storage, security protocols, software and hardware configurations, permissions, and remote access policies. Standards should be practical, reviewed regularly, and well documented.

3. Measure & Track: Continuously monitor compliance with standards, identify recurring non-compliance issues, and promptly implement corrective actions. Regular (at least quarterly) reviews help maintain control and improve IT outcomes.

Finally, the presentation advises using these principles when evaluating IT service providers or internal teams, focusing not just on price but on demonstrated ability to deliver reliable, standardized, and measurable IT support. Though initial effort is required, this structured approach ultimately reduces outages, interruptions, and stress, enabling smoother workflows and controlled, business-aligned IT environments for AEC firms.
