Video Summary
The webinar was the second part of a strategic communications series for AE firms, focused on how to navigate media and community response to data center projects. Presenter Adam Waikounas explained that while data centers were once evaluated mainly on land, power, and fiber, they now face major resistance from communities, elected officials, media, and advocacy groups. Key concerns include energy use, water consumption, noise, land conservation, transparency, zoning changes, lawsuits, and fears about AI and rising utility costs.

Waikounas emphasized that successful projects require early, proactive engagement, not just technical excellence. He recommended community risk due diligence, stakeholder mapping, polling or sentiment research, and plain-language communication that avoids jargon. He warned against common mistakes such as using NDAs, relying on celebrity spokespeople, or dismissing concerns as misinformation. Instead, developers should listen first, explain who is behind a project, and communicate how decisions are made.

He also covered media strategy, urging teams to build relationships with local reporters, provide simple messaging, and prepare technical experts for interviews and public meetings. Social listening on Facebook, Reddit, and other platforms was highlighted as a way to track concerns and opposition tactics. Public meetings should be carefully planned, ideally with a hybrid format that combines open dialogue and direct interaction.

Finally, he stressed the importance of community benefit agreements, internal coordination, and treating the community as a partner. His closing advice: engage before you announce, listen before you sell, and remember that communities ultimately grant permission to operate.
