Pdf Summary
The opening session of the Senior Executives Institute introduced the program’s five-part leadership journey and its goal: strengthening A/E firm leadership so firms and the industry can better meet changing challenges. The sessions progress from leadership context and personal mastery to firm stewardship, adaptive change, and authentic leadership.

Participants were encouraged to build trust as a cohort through brief check-ins, attentive listening, reflection, openness, and willingness to take risks. The faculty emphasized a learning mindset: stay curious, welcome challenges and feedback, recognize limiting beliefs, and revise internal narratives rather than treating abilities as fixed.

A central theme was that leadership changes as people move from front-line roles through mid-level management to senior executive positions. Each transition requires a broader organizational focus and longer time horizon. Leaders must retain what remains useful from past experience, let go of habits that impede growth, and develop new capabilities. Examples include shifting from doing work personally to delegating and supporting staff, moving beyond siloed or technical perspectives toward collaboration and strategy, and learning to engage, inspire, and know when to step in or step back.

The session also invited participants to reflect on leadership moments and identify lessons from people and experiences that shaped their own leadership. Its overall message: effective leadership depends on continuous self-awareness, growth, and adaptation.
