Video Summary
Thomas Grogan, Chief Economist at ECEC, opened a session of the Data and AI Subcommittee series, emphasizing the group's collaborative efforts tackling technology challenges in engineering firms. Presenters Dan Axson and Jennifer Holman focused on organizational maturity’s impact on risks and opportunities amid growing AI adoption in the engineering, consulting, and construction (AEC) sector. They outlined four maturity levels—from performed (isolated, staff-driven tech use) to optimized (fully integrated AI-driven operations)—across five domains: adoption, readiness, integration, innovation culture, and performance. Each level presents evolving risks, from fragmented data and inconsistent ROI at lower levels to scale, dependency, and cybersecurity concerns at higher stages. Key challenges include siloed workflows, resistance to change, and fragmented data governance. Advancing maturity requires benchmarking current state, establishing clear AI and data strategies, robust governance, integrating project and back-office systems, fostering an innovation culture, and linking performance KPIs to business goals. Practical tips include starting with bottom-up AI adoption, forming centers of excellence focusing on select projects, and tailoring approaches by department. Real-world examples highlighted include AI chatbots for HR and AI-assisted resource allocation, proposal generation, and billing collaboration. The session stressed that AI adoption is no longer optional—companies face greater risk from inertia than change—and underscored the importance of deliberate, scalable maturity progression to harness AI’s full value while managing associated risks.
