Video Summary
The ACEC Michigan webinar, "The Future of Engineering Leadership," explored motivations and expectations of the next generation of leaders in the AEC industry through a detailed study led by leadership consulting firm Impact Partners. The research surveyed 407 Michigan engineering professionals across all career stages to understand aspirations, values, and attitudes toward leadership. Key findings showed that about 79% were interested in leadership roles, primarily to develop others through mentoring rather than status or financial gain. Work-life balance was a common concern, with flexibility—such as hybrid and remote work—being highly valued, provided there was mutual trust between employees and management.

Professional relationships were deemed essential for career growth and industry success, with emphasis on the responsibility of seasoned professionals to mentor newer employees. Regarding association involvement, respondents favored learning and development opportunities, clear involvement paths, and both in-person and virtual networking, preferably in informal settings that build community beyond formal business events.

Recommendations included formalizing flexible work policies, promoting mentorship programs, and offering locally accessible, engaging networking events. The study noted remarkable consistency in attitudes across career stages but suggested further research on early-career professionals. Overall, the findings aim to help firms and associations adapt their culture and engagement strategies to better support emerging leaders.
